All Aboard Florida closes on another property for MiamiCentral Station complex

Facchina Construction Named Contractor to Build Two-Acre Development in Historic Overtown

Coral Gables, FL (September 2, 2015) – Reaching another milestone in its development of MiamiCentral, All Aboard Florida recently closed on a two-acre parcel in Historic Overtown at NW 2nd Ave and NW 6th Street. The planned development clears the way for 3 MiamiCentral, a multi-use complex that will enhance and support the main nine-acre station and serve as a multimodal gateway accessing All Aboard Florida, Tri-Rail, Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus.

From initial discussions about the mobility system and design of urban living spaces, All Aboard Florida has worked closely with the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (SEOPW CRA).

“Working with the Overtown CRA to finalize this transaction is another big step in the development of the MiamiCentral Station Complex and its multimodal system – all ahead of schedule,” said Mike Reininger, president of All Aboard Florida. “Since the start of our project, we've been committed to growing the economy of Overtown and creating more than 400 jobs directly or through our partners.”

All Aboard Florida has selected Facchina Construction to perform pre-construction and construction-management services for the project. Construction activities will begin later this year, and sub-contractor and career opportunities will be announced in coming months.

“We are truly looking forward to working with All Aboard Florida and earning their trust and confidence as a builder and contractor that they can depend on,” said Jesus R. Vazquez, chief operating officer of Facchina Construction of Florida.

The twelve-story, 3 MiamiCentral complex will house more than 130,000 square feet of Class A commercial office and retail space. One of its first tenants will be All Aboard Florida, which will relocate its corporate headquarters to the new site from Coral Gables once work is completed. The centerpiece of the complex will be a mural by Miami-based sculptor and visual artist Robert McKnight.

Addressing the food desert issue that has plagued Overtown for many years, 3 MiamiCentral will feature a national grocer. Off-site parking for the Lyric Theatre is also being incorporated in the complex.

“I'm excited to see this project moving forward and continuing to spur job creation and economic investment in Historic Overtown and downtown Miami,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson (District 3 – Overtown, El Portal, Liberty City, and Miami Shores). “This is one of several developments that will truly be a catalyst for transforming Overtown into a sustainable community where people can live, work and play.”

Other partners working on 3 MiamiCentral are AECOM, a global provider of professional, technical and management support services in transportation and other markets, which is designing the complex, and Miami-based Design2Form, which is serving as design consultant and bringing first-hand knowledge of the robust history and culture of Overtown to the project. The complex is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, and expected to achieve LEED Silver certification.
